Is hypnotism real?

What is hypnotism? Is it a kind of art? Or is it something that anyone can perform? Is the claim that one can control another person’s thoughts true?

The term hypnotism is referred to as “Nokkuvarmam” in Tamil.

Some people have created the notion that through hypnotism, one can instantaneously subdue an opponent or gain complete control over someone merely by looking at them.

This is purely imagination and not true. No scientific evidence supports that this can be achieved. We can confidently challenge that this can never be proven, even until the Day of Judgment.

We have challenged many to use hypnotism to subdue us. Their only response is that hypnotism works only on those who believe in it; it does not work on non-believers. All fraudsters(?) use this same explanation to escape accountability.

After reading numerous books on hypnotism, it is clear that there is no scientific fact or logical basis to support it. We conclude that those claiming to perform hypnotism require mental health treatment.

We are prepared to prove in front of any so-called hypnotism expert that it is nothing but a trick or deception.

From a religious perspective, believing in this constitutes shirk (associating partners with Allah).

A person can only be affected by the means that Allah has established for causing harm. Causing harm to someone merely by looking at them, without any external tools or means, is a power that belongs solely to Allah. No human being can affect another person in this way without the use of external means.

We can believe that a person can cause another person physical injury or pain through the use of a tool or instrument. Since this is visibly evident, we do not need any religious proof to support it.

However, if it is possible to cause such effects through magical powers without using external devices, then there must be evidence for this in Islamic teachings.

We know that believing that there is none like Allah is a fundamental tenet of Islam.

If any human is placed in the position of Allah in any way, it is a clear act of Shirk (associating partners with Allah). This would contradict the fundamental belief that there is none like Allah.

If Allah wills to disable a person, to paralyze their limbs, or to confine them to a bed, He can accomplish it without using any device. He does this in such a way that no one can comprehend how it happened.

Believing that humans can also achieve such feats contradicts the fundamental belief that there is none like Allah

This is what people believe about hypnotism. It is believed that a hypnotist can paralyze a person’s limbs merely with their gaze, without touching them or using any device. They also believe that a hypnotist can uncover all the secrets of a person’s mind through hypnotism.

When such beliefs are held, the hypnotist is perceived to possess abilities similar to those of Allah (الله).

Our hearts and minds are entirely under Allah’s control. The power to change or influence the hearts and minds is not granted to humans. No human can influence our thoughts in the same way that Allah can.

This belief reinforces that no human possesses the attributes or powers of Allah, and there is none like Allah

Knowing what lies within the hearts is one of Allah’s exclusive attributes. Hypnotists, however, present themselves as sharing in this divine ability.

The following verses — 3:119, 3:154, 5:7, 8:43, 11:5, 27:74, 28:69, 29:10, 31:23, 35:38, 39:7, 40:19, 42:24, 57:6, 64:4, and 67:13 — all emphasize that knowing what is in the hearts is a unique ability granted solely to Allah.

To believe in hypnotism as a method of uncovering the secrets within people’s hearts is to reject these numerous verses of the Qur’an. It implies accepting that others can share Allah’s exclusive power, which goes against the core Islamic belief that there is none like Allah

Verily, the hearts of all the sons of Adam are between the two fingers out of the fingers of the Compassionate Lord as one heart. He turns that to any (direction) He likes. Then Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: O Allah, the Turner of the hearts, turn our hearts to Thine obedience.

Muslim:6921

Therefore, if a person believes in hypnotism, it falls into the category of Shirk (associating partners with Allah).

Apart from the fact that one can skillfully converse with a person and extract some information from them, all other claims made about hypnotism are false. We have no doubt whatsoever about this conclusion.
