Throwing Three Handfuls of Soil

During burial, participants throw three handfuls of soil over the grave. This practice has a basis in the Sunnah.

حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ الدِّمَشْقِي، حَدّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ صَالِحٍ، حَدّثَنَا سَلَمَةُ بْنُ كُلْثُومٍ، حَدّثَنَا الْأَوْزَاعِي، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ – صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ – صَلَّى عَلَى جِنَازَةٍ، ثُمَّ أَتَى قَبْرَ ‏الْمَيِّتِ، فَحَثَى عَلَيْهِ مِنْ قِبَلِ رَأْسِهِ ثَلَاثًا

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) prayed over a deceased person and then went to the burial site, where he threw three handfuls of soil from the head side of the grave.

However, there is no basis for reciting phrases like “Minha khalaqnakum, wafiha nu’idukum, waminha nukhrijukum taratan ukhra” during this act.


Supplications When Placing the Body in the Grave

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ثَنَا أَبِي ثَنَا وَكِيع ثَنَا هَمَّام عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الصِّدِّيق النَّاجِي عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: “إِذَا وَضَعْتُمْ مَوْتَاكُمْ فِي قُبُورِهِمْ فَقُولُوا: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَعَلَى سُنَّةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ”

Shu‘ayb Al-Arna’ut: The narrators are trustworthy and belong to the two Shaykhs.

When placing the deceased in the grave, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) instructed: “In the name of Allah and upon the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).”
